BioWisdom and Corpora partner to help pharmaceutical investigators find and analyse important documents faster
Cambridge, UK (PRWEB) May 1, 2004
BioWisdom, the world leader in Ontology for pharmaceutical R&D, and Corpora Software announce a strategic partnership to deliver powerful document location and navigation solutions to the pharmaceutical industry. Under the terms of the agreement BioWisdom becomes an authorised reseller of CorporaÂs knowledge discovery application, ÂJump!Â. BioWisdom will also use Jump! internally to accelerate the ongoing creation and development of their Sofia Ontology.
The pharmaceutical industry is a highly regulated and information rich environment, with substantial documentation required to support many functions. These include FDA submissions for new drug applications, other internal documents, the vast body of external scientific literature and post marketing surveillance reporting. Professionals throughout the industry spend a significant portion of their time reading through long complex documents to identify a few paragraphs of information that are relevant to their work. They lack the tools to locate and efficiently interrogate the information they need.
Using BioWisdomÂs and CorporaÂs products, it is possible to quickly identify and retrieve the most relevant documents on a given subject, and then rapidly navigate through the documents using a linked index to move directly to the key paragraphs. As a result, investigators spend less time reading documents to find the evidence they need. The combination of ontology and natural language processing (NLP) technologies from the two companies creates an integrated solution offering significant productivity gains. The Corpora products can be used to enable users to view evidence underpinning BioWisdomÂs comprehensive Sofia Ontology. Alternatively, the Sofia Ontology can be used within CorporaÂs Jump! product to mark-up relevant terms and create a navigable tree for any document of interest. Clicking on the tree takes you straight to all references to a chosen term or concept in the original document. Multiple documents can be navigated imultaneously and users can annotate the Jump! workspace to share their findings with colleagues.
Commenting on the announcement, Gordon Baxter, CEO BioWisdom Ltd said ÂThe Corpora agreement illustrates how the combination of industry knowledge, ontology and ontology delivery expertise enables BioWisdom to partner with solution providers outside the pharmaceutical domain to create valuable new productivity solutions that can be applied across all pharmaceutical business processes.Â
ÂThe BioWisdom agreement is an important step towards achieving our stated aim of selling product to the substantial pharmaceutical industry. The Sofia product architecture enables Corpora to build upon our partnerÂs existing investment in semantic capability to rapidly align our products to the needs of the pharmaceutical scientist and business user said Philip Wye, Sales & Marketing Director, Corpora Software.

Ontology is a branch of science that deals with knowledge capture and representation, formally describing a subject area in terms of its fundamental concepts and the relationships that exists between concepts. Ontology can be used to exploit knowledge underpinning a series of information management applications such as; enhanced information retrieval, text-mining, annotation of databases, and tools to facilitate discovery and decision-making. Ontology is well suited to describing the complex relationships that exist in the biomedical domain.
